If you’ve been dreaming about Blue Ridge Parkway engagement photos, I want to help you actually plan them. This stretch of the mountains near Boone is one of my favorite places on earth to photograph two people in love, and I get why couples drive in from all over to shoot here. So instead of just showing you a pretty session and calling it a day, I want to walk you through where we went, when to go, and how to think about planning your own, using Emma and Daniel’s September session as our guide.

A little about these two before we get into it. Emma and Daniel met two-step dancing back in Charlotte, which tells you basically everything you need to know about them. They are the kind of couple who will start dancing in the middle of a mountain overlook without being asked, and yes, that absolutely happened, and yes, I got the photos. The Parkway had been their spot for a long time, so bringing them back here to celebrate getting married felt right.

Levi and I actually drove up the day before and camped at Julian Price the night prior, and let me tell you, arriving to those first cool September evenings in the mountains put us in the perfect mood for this whole thing. Fall was just barely starting to move in. Here’s how the day went, and how you can plan a session like it.

1. Start Somewhere That Actually Means Something

Our first stop was a creek where Daniel loves to fish. When we pulled up, he was already down at the water with a line in, getting a little fishing in while Emma finished getting ready in the car. I loved that. It set the whole tone. Nobody was stiff or nervous, because we started in a place that was already theirs.

If you take one thing from this guide, let it be this. The best location for your engagement photos is not always the most photogenic one, it is the one that means something to you. A spot tied to your story is going to bring out something real and relaxed that I just can’t manufacture at a random overlook. Emma and Daniel’s creek was proof of that from the very first frame.

2. Thunder Hill Overlook, for the Big Mountain Views

From the creek we headed up to Thunder Hill Overlook, which is one of the most loved spots on this part of the Parkway for good reason. You get those huge, layered blue mountain views rolling out behind you, and you don’t have to hike to reach them, which makes it a great pick if you want the drama without the trek.

This is also where Emma and Daniel broke into a little two-step for me, right there on the overlook. It was the most them thing they could have done, and those ended up being some of my favorite photos of the whole day. That’s the magic of bringing your own personality into a session. The view is beautiful on its own, but the two of you doing something you love is what makes the photos feel alive.

If you want those classic Blue Ridge mountain photos and you’d rather not commit to a hike, Thunder Hill is one of the most accessible spots near Boone.

3. Raven Rocks, for a Little Drama

Next we made our way over to Raven Rocks, a cliff-like outcrop that gives you that wide open, on top of the world feeling. It’s a gorgeous spot if you want your photos to feel a little bolder and more dramatic.

A couple of honest planning notes here. Wear shoes you can actually move around in, because the footing on the rocky spots takes a little care. And these dramatic overlooks look their absolute best in soft light, so aim for the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset rather than harsh midday sun.

4. A Wildflower Meadow, Soft and Full of Life

After all that big mountain drama, we slipped into a grassy meadow full of wildflowers, and it was such a sweet change of pace. Meadows give you this soft, romantic, sun-through-the-grass feeling that balances out the sweeping overlook shots really nicely.

If wildflowers are on your vision board, timing matters. Late spring through summer is your window for blooms, and even in early September we still had some color to work with. The Parkway shifts fast from season to season, so it’s worth thinking about what you want your backdrop to be doing before you lock in a date.

5. End With Something Cozy (Ours Was a Marshmallow Roast)

We finished the day with a marshmallow roast on the side of the Parkway, which was completely impromptu and completely perfect. Emma had actually brought special marshmallows all the way from Washington state, and she shared them with Levi and me while we all sat around as the light got low. I even have a photo of Levi and me roasting a few ourselves, which never happens, so I’m holding onto that one.

Here’s my tip, and it might be my favorite one. Build a little moment into the end of your session. A picnic, coffee from a thermos, a marshmallow roast, anything that gives the two of you something to actually do together. That’s almost always when I get the most natural, unposed, laughing photos, because you forget I’m even there.

Don’t worry, they gave us some marshmallows to roast too! Such a blast.

Where to Stay: Julian Price

Since Levi and I came up the night before, we camped at Julian Price Memorial Park, right off the Parkway, and I can’t recommend it enough if you’re traveling in for your session. There are beautiful trails around Price Lake, you can rent a canoe right there, and it’s only a few minutes from Boone whenever you need food or a coffee run. It makes an easy and gorgeous home base if you want to turn your engagement session into a little mountain weekend, which honestly, you should.

A Few More Blue Ridge Parkway Spots Worth Considering

We couldn’t fit every beautiful location into one day, so if you’re mapping out your own Blue Ridge Parkway engagement photos near Boone, here are a few more I love:

• Rough Ridge, a short but iconic hike with boardwalk views out toward Grandfather Mountain
• Price Lake, calm water and mountain reflections right at Julian Price, and the one spot on the Parkway where you can bring a canoe (or rent one!)
• Moses Cone and Bass Lake, gentle carriage trails and open meadows with a softer, more pastoral feel
• Linville Falls, a bit farther south, but the waterfall makes a stunning backdrop (expect an intense hike!)

When’s the Best Time for Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement Photos?

Every season up here has its own personality. Spring and summer bring wildflowers and all that lush green. Fall is absolutely stunning, but I’ll be honest with you, the Parkway gets packed in October, especially on weekends, so go on a weekday if you possibly can. Winter is quiet and dramatic with those bare mountain views and hardly anyone around. Whenever you come, aim for early morning or the golden hour before sunset for the softest, prettiest light.

Our September timing was kind of the sweet spot, with the summer crowds gone, the air just starting to cool, and fall barely beginning to whisper.

How to Plan Your Own Session

A few last things I always tell my couples. Give yourselves plenty of time so you’re not rushing between spots, because the Parkway is best when you slow down and soak it in. Pick at least one location that genuinely means something to you, the way that creek did for Emma and Daniel. Think about the feeling you’re after, whether that’s dramatic cliffs, quiet water, or soft wildflower light, and let that guide where we go. And if you’re driving in from out of town, make a real weekend of it. These mountains are worth lingering in.
