The morning before this Portland Head Light engagement session, I stood on this exact stretch of coastline in gray, gloomy, relentless wind and quietly hoped. I had scouted every corner of the lighthouse the afternoon before — filed away every rock, every angle, every place the light might land — and then I went to bed not really knowing what the morning would give us.

And then the sun came up.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I was. After a whole day of flat, moody light, we got golden — that soft, early Maine coastal light spilling across the rocks and catching the lighthouse just right. And here’s the part I really wasn’t expecting: it wasn’t nearly as cold as the day before. For a sunrise session on the Maine coast in October, that felt like a small gift handed to us with open hands.

Madison & Tyler — High School Sweethearts on the Maine Coast

Madison and Tyler are high school sweethearts, which I will never not find sweet. They’re both attending college right here in Portland, they recently got engaged, and this summer they’re eloping in Acadia National Park at Otter Point — a spot I photographed on this very same trip and fell completely in love with (more on that in a second).

There’s an ease between the two of them that you can’t manufacture. When you’ve been someone’s person since high school, you don’t have to perform it — you just are it. My whole job on a morning like this is to slow down, get out of the way, and let that show up on its own. And it did, over and over.

The Light Did Something I’ll Remember for a Long Time

Photographing at Portland Head Light at sunrise is one of those mornings that stays with you. The lighthouse glowing in the first light of the day. The waves rolling over the rocks below. The cold, sharp air that makes everything feel more alive. I kept catching myself thinking, I cannot believe I get to do this.

The rocks along this shoreline have this incredible texture — almost like wood grain — and in golden light they turn warm and rich in a way the gloom the day before had completely hidden. Madison and Tyler tucked into each other against that backdrop, and the whole thing just came together.

Thinking About a Portland Head Light Engagement Session? A Few Honest Notes

If you’re a couple considering Portland Head Light for your engagement photos, here’s what I’d actually tell you:

Go at sunrise. It’s the whole magic. The light is soft and golden, you’ll have the place almost to yourselves, and you avoid the crowds that build up at this lighthouse as the day goes on. It’s one of the most iconic lighthouses on the entire East Coast for a reason — which means it gets busy.

Dress warm — warmer than you think. That Maine coastal wind is no joke, even in fall. Layers you can slip in and out of between frames go a long way, and there’s no shame in a big cozy coat waiting just off-camera.

Let the location do what it does. Portland Head Light has stood in Cape Elizabeth since 1791, and it has this rare quality of making you feel wonderfully small — like you’re standing somewhere that has watched a very long story unfold. As a place to mark the beginning of your story, it’s hard to beat.

From Portland Head Light to Otter Point

What I love most about Madison and Tyler’s session is that it’s really a beginning. This summer they’ll say their vows at Otter Point in Acadia — and I got to spend time on that same coastline on this trip.
