Choosing a location for your engagement session can feel like a big decision — and honestly, the best sessions almost always happen in places that mean something to you. A favorite coffee shop, a park you love, or even somewhere tied to your story will almost always make photos feel relaxed and genuine.
As a Durham wedding photographer, I love helping couples find locations that are both meaningful and beautiful. If you’re still deciding where to go for your session, here are some of my favorite spots near Raleigh and Durham to get you inspired.

The Capitol Grounds are one of my go-to locations for engagement sessions when couples want something clean and classic. The white buildings and simple backgrounds give photos a really timeless feel and keep the focus where it belongs — on the two of you.
One of the reasons I love this spot so much is how reliable the light is. It photographs beautifully year-round and is especially great during the winter months when other locations can feel a little dull. As a Durham wedding photographer, this is one of the places I often suggest when couples want an elevated look without anything feeling too styled or formal. If you’re drawn to simple, refined photos that will still feel good years from now, the Capitol Grounds are a really solid choice

Lake Crabtree is a peaceful waterfront park that’s perfect for couples who want their session to feel relaxed and natural. The water, open space, and surrounding trails create a calm setting without feeling busy or distracting.
This location is more straightforward and doesn’t offer a ton of variety, but that’s actually part of its charm. It gives us room to lean into the landscape and create photos that feel connected and genuine. It works well in every season, including winter, and is great for shorter sessions that still feel intentional.

Duke University is a well-known Durham landmark and a meaningful spot for many couples. The stone buildings and walkways give the campus a classic look without feeling overdone, and there are plenty of quiet corners for intimate shots.
If you’re drawn to something a little romantic and moody, Duke is a great option. The architecture adds interest without taking focus away from you, and the light around campus is consistently beautiful. It’s perfect for couples who want a session that feels meaningful to their story or just drawn to the city’s charm.

Ayr Mount is one of those spots that really has it all. The historic house and grounds are full of charm, the architecture is classic, and the light here is always beautiful. There are so many green spaces to wander around, from large old oak trees to quiet corners that feel private and peaceful — perfect for photos that feel natural and relaxed.
As a Durham wedding photographer, I love this location because it offers variety without feeling forced. You can get a mix of open fields, shaded areas, and architectural shots in one session, making it feel effortless and fun.

Photo Permit: None! I have emailed Jenrette Foundation and never heard back so I think they must not have a policy in place.

Historic Oak View Park has a little bit of everything — a rustic barn, gardens, and rolling, shaded hills that make photos feel relaxed and romantic.
It’s a spot where you can wander and let moments unfold naturally. The variety in one location makes it easy to get a session that feels effortless while still giving you depth and character. Read more information on the park website.

WRAL Azalea Gardens might just be my favorite spot on this list. In the spring, the flowers are absolutely stunning, but even later in the summer when everything is still green, it has this total secret-garden vibe that feels magical.
This location feels intimate and charming without ever feeling forced. If I were getting my own engagement photos in the Raleigh/Durham area, there’s a good chance they’d be here. It’s playful, romantic, and perfect for couples who want to feel comfortable while still getting beautiful, timeless images. Curious if the flowers are blooming yet? Check out WRAL’s live garden cam!

The NC Museum of Art is one of my favorite spots for couples who want something a little different but still timeless. Between the open fields, walking trails, and unique art installations, there’s a mix of natural and modern backdrops all in one place.
It’s a really flexible spot — you can go for classic, romantic photos in the gardens, or add a bit of edge with the sculptures and architecture. I love how it gives couples options while still feeling relaxed and true to who they are. This is one of those locations where you can let moments happen naturally and still walk away with photos that feel curated without ever being stiff. Read more about the location here.
